We stayed a couple of nights in a local hotel next to an extremely productive cow barn. Oddly enough the smell was a nice change. It reminded me of being younger and growing up around cows and horses and it reminded Whitney to read the Trip Advisor reviews next time. Nonetheless, the Alps were gorgous and the people were more than friendly with their Bavarian charm.
We chose to hike to the castle and enjoy the spring air. Our hiking path took us up the back way (non-touristy) and through a gorge with several amazing waterfalls.
As we made our way closer this fairy tale castle became more real and imposing.
Unfortunately, when we reached the castle steps, the shade, peacefulness and tranquility of the woods was immediately drowned out by adolescent Italiens and the glare from their giant mirror sunglasses. So, we decided to buy a later tour time slot and enjoyed a tour of the castle grounds while we waited.
You can see the village where we stayed in the distance.
The castle (Schloss Neuschwanstein) was a magical as ever and the tour highlighted the short reign of Louis II of Bavaria and the splendor he desired in his castles.
Louis II only spent 160 days total in the castle as he was found incapable of governing to due lack of mental stability....??
We trekked down from the castle and enjoyed a lovely Bavarian pils and gawked at the view of the building that has stood on the tip of a mountain since 1869.
Our afternoon in Bavaria was spent at the spas soaking up the local minerals. Fresh and rejuvenated we headed back to Strasbourg. Stay tuned...Whit conquers the Hamburg marathon!!
