Slovenia and Croatia: round one

Well, a few months back we had the pleasure of hosting some great friends from Knoxville, Tenn. Lyndsey and Nick came over to visit and they were even brave enough to venture to Eastern Europe with us.

Our trip started out just lke any other vacation...a drive on the Autobahn in Germany, then crossing the Austrian Alps and finally down into one of the newest countries in the European Union, Slovenia.

We found a great hotel in the Slovenian Alps, but most importantly we found a buffet dinner. The dinner was a hit for several reasons. 1) I haven't seen a buffet in a year 2) It is the hot spot for local Slovenian ballroom dancing and 3) the tour group from Asia that tumbled off their tour bus and literally ran (not kidding) to the buffet.

We left Slovenia and headed to Croatia, specifically Trogir, Croatia, which is on the Adriatic Sea. The 4 hour drive through the green lush, then arid landscape all of the sudden became a beautiful view of the Croatian coastline.

Lyndsey and Whit are childhood friends and they hadn't seen each other in over a year. Another great part about this reunion trip was that they are both pregnant at the same time. They were able to share this joy together and discuss the quickly approaching reality of parenthood.


The four of us stayed in a cozy apartment directly on the water with some absolutely amazing views. It was a great location and the mornings were calm and relaxing. The apartment was great because it allowed Whitney and Lyndsey to have breakfast together in the cozy kitchen and Nick and I to chat over coffee on the balcony as the harbor came alive with boat traffic.


Initially, we had some mauvais temps (bad weather), so we decided to spend the day exploring the old town...and it is old. The Greeks first colonized the city in 300 B.C.


The town remains a cute little fishing village, as it is surrounded by water.


After some debate over which pizza with anchovies sounded best we found a nice little restaurant tucked away in the narrow streets of Trogir. Nick and I had picked up a few Croatian words by this time, including Karlovacko and točeno pivo. For the few of you out there that don't speak Croate, that means draft beer and Karlovacko is...,well, the king of beers in Croatia.
